Harold E. Wessel, 89, of Cape Girardeau passed away, Sunday, Sept. 6, 2015 after a brief stay in the Lutheran Home and St Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. He was born August 12, 1926 in Gordonville, Missouri to Albert W. and Laura Hanschen Wessel. He and Eugenie Siebert were married on June 18, 1950 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau.
Harold served in the Army’s Military Police Battalion in the Philippines immediately following WWII until he was discharged in 1947. After his service, he farmed the family farm in Cape Girardeau County his entire life.
He was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church of Gordonville where he served on the finance board and as an elder and also belonged to the Men’s Club.
Harold’s loving survivors include his wife of 65 years, Eugenie Wessel, four children, Dennis Wessel, Linda (Robert) Bohnsack, Kay (Adam) Kidd all of Cape Girardeau, and Karen (Gary) Marklin of St. Louis. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren: Leah (Travis) Cagle, Eric (Melissa) Wessel, Myka Bohnsack, Lainie (Reid) Thomas, Luke (Tara) Marklin, Krista Marklin, Daniel Marklin and Blake, Ellie, Spencer, Bennett, Jolie and Kyah Kidd. He also survived by 4 great-grandchildren: Blaiklee and Kholbie Cagle, Owen Wessel and August Marklin.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Ruby Dell Rehkopf and his daughter-in-law, Susan Wessel.
Visitation will be Friday, Sept. 11, from 12:00 noon till service time at 2:00 pm at the Zion Lutheran Church in Gordonville, with the Rev. Wayne Schwiesow officiating.
Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery.
