Veteran-IntroMartin Wilhelm “Marty” Wachter, 74, of Cape Girardeau, formerly of Old Appleton, passed away Sunday, January 3, 2016 at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.

He was born August 1, 1941, in New Wells, son of Otto O. “Chip” and Lillian Haertling Wachter.  He and Agnes Thomas were married June 4, 1966 in Uniontown, Missouri.

Marty attended Immanuel Lutheran School in New Wells.  He enlisted in the United States Navy February 14, 1960.  After being honorably discharged in 1962, he worked at Shawneetown Feed and Seed in Shawneetown, and on the family farm.  He retired as an over the road truck driver in 2003.  Marty was Baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in New Wells and became a member of Grace Lutheran Chruch at Uniontown in 1966.  He was a member of the American Legion Post #133 and the VFW Post #4282 in Perryville, and being an avid bowler, was a member of the 700 Bowling League in Jackson from 1962 until 2003.

Survivors include his former wife, Agnes Wachter of Old Appleton; a brother, Kenny (Sue) Wachter of Jackson; two sisters, Janet (Steve) Statler, and Marlene Scholl of Jackson; a sister-in-law, Retha (Terry) Pfeiffer of New Wells; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Charles “Charlie” Wachter and an infant sister.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Friday, January 8, 2016 at the chapel of McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson, and from 10:00 a.m. until service time Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church in Uniontown.  An American Legion Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

The funeral will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, at the church.

Interment will follow in Grace Lutheran Church Cemetery, with full military honors.

Memorials may take the form of contributions to Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau or Grace Lutheran Church.
