Alfred E. Baker, 82, of Jackson, formerly of Marion, Illinois, passed away Thursday, Dec. 13, 2018 at Monticello House in Jackson.
He was born Sept. 18, 1936, in Mississippi County, Missouri, son of Lindsey G and Opha Mae Kennedy Baker. He and Jackilyn Sims were married Jan. 27, 1955.
Alfred was baptized at First Christian Church of Anniston, Missouri. He was a graduate of Anniston High School. He joined the National Guard and then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on Oct. 28, 1954 and was honorably discharged July 10, 1958. He worked for Fabick Caterpillar in Sikeston as a diesel mechanic and then later transferred to Marion where he was a service manager, retiring after 36 years in 1999.
Alfred enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, riding his motorcycle and most of all, spending time with his grandchildren, who adored him.
Loving survivors include his wife of 63 years, Jackie Baker, of Jackson; a son, Greg (Debbie) Baker of Jackson; a daughter, Melissa (Todd) McClendon of Lees Summit, Missouri; four grandchildren, Adam (Chrissy) Baker, Susan Simpson, Scott Baker and Kati (J.D.) McNeary; ten great-grandchildren and two sisters, Rita Walker of Streetman, Texas and Bobbie Cartiva of Arnold, Missouri.
He was preceded in death by his parents, seven sisters and three brothers.
The visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, 2018 at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Jerry Adams officiating.
Inurnment will be at a later date in Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield, Missouri with full military honors.
The family suggests that contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
