Cleman was a 1968 graduate of Jackson High School. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army, serving honorably from July 9, 1968 to June 23, 1970, including one year in Vietman. In addition to these honors, he was also awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge. He was a member of American Legion Post 158 in Jackson.
