Donald E. Hanscom, 82, of Jackson, passed away Wednesday, September 19, 2018, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.
He was born July 20, 1936, in Bar Harbor, Maine, to Maurice E. and Josephine M. Gooch Hanscom. He and Mary Elizabeth “Betty” York were married January 9, 1960, in Long Beach, California.
Don graduated High School in Bar Harbor in 1956 and soon enlisted in the U.S. Navy July 2, 1956, in Bangor, Maine. During his military career, he attained an associate degree in Data processing while in California. He served honorably for nearly 30 years, retiring as Sr. Master Chief Petty Officer. He sailed the ocean blue and was discharged August 31, 1984, in Honolulu, Hawaii. His military career took him and his family to San Diego, California, Rome, Italy, Hawaii and many other places. After his retirement, he and Betty returned to Jackson and Don worked 16 years as a deputy sheriff for the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff’s Department. He enjoyed bowling, was secretary for VIP Industries and was involved with the SB 40 Board with VIP.
Loving survivors include his wife of 58 years, Betty Hanscom of Jackson; two daughters, Donna and Barbara Hanscom of Jackson; a sister, Martha (the late Henry, Jr.) Conary of Jackson; two nieces and a nephew, Cindy Suhre of Jackson, Linda Suhre of St. Louis and Maurice Conary of O’Fallon, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Carrol Hanscom;
The visitation will be from 3 – 6 p.m. on Sunday, September 23, 2018 at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday, September 24, 2018 at the funeral home, with Pastor Matthew Cromer officiating. Interment and military honors will follow at Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson.
