Dorothy I. Hanners, 92, recently of Cape Girardeau and formerly of Jackson, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2020, at Chateau Girardeau in Cape Girardeau.
She was born June 22, 1927, in Bessville, Missouri, daughter of Charley and Lillian Rhodes Sitzes. She and Wendell Delmer Hanners were married May 14, 1948 in Bessville. He passed away Dec. 26, 2015.
Dorothy was a graduate of Patton High School and Southeast Missouri College. She retired from Meadow Heights School and had previously taught at various one-room schools in the area. Dorothy served as a 4-H leader, a class sponsor and enjoyed quilting with the Blue Creek Quilters Group. She was a former member and secretary-treasurer of Reagan’s Chapel near Patton, Missouri, and a current member of New McKendree United Methodist Church in Jackson.
Loving survivors include two daughters, Jeannie (Bill) Fadler of Jackson and Nell (the late Bill) Barrett of Godfrey, Illinois; two grandchildren, Brian Barrett and Nicole (Tyler) Stevens, and one great-grandchild expected later this month.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, a sister, Arpha Slinkard and two brothers, Charley and Carl Sitzes.
Visitation will be 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.
Funeral service will be at 3 p.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Jimmie Corbin officiating.
Private interment will be held Jan. 6, 2020, in Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield, Missouri.
Memorials may take the form of contributions to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Association.
