Roy W. “Bud” McGuire, age 89, of Cape Girardeau, formerly of Gordonville, passed away Saturday, May 12, 2018 at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau where he had been a resident since 2012.
He was born July 18, 1928 in Gordonville, son of Bern Frank and Bessie Marie Quade McGuire. He and Virginia LaVerne Dalton were married April 21, 1950. She passed away March 3, 1999.
Roy was baptized in Zion United Methodist Church in Gordonville and later joined New McKendree United Methodist Church in Jackson. He was inducted into the U.S. Army January 22, 1952 and served until his honorable discharge as Sargent on October 21, 1953. While in the military, Roy fought at Pork Chop Hill and T-Bone Hill, receiving two purple hearts, a Korean Service Medal with two bronze service stars and the United Nations Service Medal. He was a full-time farmer and farmed all of his life on the Century Family Farm near Gordonville. In addition to farming, he was a carpenter, working with Wes Hitt, Ed Thompson and Robert Renne, building new homes. Roy was a member of Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post in Jackson and was a former board member of MFA Oil Company in Jackson.
Loving survivors include four daughters, Karen (Jim) Hall of St. Louis, Barbara Burnette (Keith Kidd) of Advance, Missouri, Nancy McGuire of Jefferson City, Missouri and Lisa (Stephen) Showmaker of Cape Girardeau; five grandchildren, James (Tammy) Hall, Andrew (Abby) Hall, Jonathan (Angie) Hall, Julie Burnette (Zac Cypret) and Lacy Burnette (Alex Anderson); four great-grandchildren, Elijah, Josephine, Anna and Payton Hall.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Voges and Betty Gene Massie.
The visitation will be Wednesday, May 16, 2018 from 4-8 p.m. at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson and Thursday from 9 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. An American Legion Service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
The funeral service will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Jimmie Corbin officiating.
Interment will be in Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson, with full military honors.
The family suggests that contributions be made to the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.
