Walter E. Lange

February 18, 1936 ~ June 25, 2019 (age 83)

Walter Lange, 83, of Jackson, passed away Tuesday, June 25, 2019, at his home.

Born in Tilsit on February 18, 1936, Walter was one of 11 children born to Ferdinand and Alma Loos Lange.  He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Tilsit and was a graduate of the church’s grade school.  Walter and Ida K. Urhahn were married May 16, 1958 at the church.

Walter was a retiree of the Missouri National Guard, having served in both the 140th Infantry Regiment and the 1140th Engineer Battalion.  He also worked 42 years as a heavy equipment operator for MoDot, retiring in 1997.   

Walter was a longtime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jackson.  He was a life member of the National Guard Association of the United States, the National Guard Association of Missouri, and Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158 in Jackson.

Loving survivors include his wife of 61 years, Ida Lange of Jackson; two children, John Lange of Jackson and Laura Richardson of Cape Girardeau; two grandsons, Ryan and Derek Richardson of Cape Girardeau; a sister, Adela (the late John) Moore of Shawneetown; and a sister-in-law, Fern (the late Richard) Lange of Jackson.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Walter Pete Lange; his parents; and nine siblings, Melva (Walter) Mirly, Hilda (August) Haunschild, Elfrieda Lange, Hulda (Renzo) James, Tekla (Alvin) Kuntze, Elda (Carl) Loenecke, Richard Lange, Ritor and Thelma Lange.

Visitation is from 10 a.m. to service time, Friday, June 28, 2019, at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.

The funeral is at 11 a.m., Friday, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Eric Longman officiating.  Military Honors will be at 1 p.m., Friday, at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield.

Memorials may take the form of contributions to the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri or Saxony Lutheran High School.
