Alan Wayne Estes, 55, of Jackson, suffered a pulmonary embolism on Sunday, June 5, 2016, at Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau. He will be missed by many friends who regularly visited Estes Deli in Jackson.
Alan was born August 1, 1960, in Cape Girardeau, to Wayne and Mary Lou Stroder Estes. He and Linda Schlichter were married May 21, 2005, in Cape Girardeau.
Alan had owned and operated Estes Deli in Jackson since 1989. He truly loved being at the deli, to the point that he didn't consider it to be work, but rather a way of life and a dedication to his family, employees, and the community.
Alan was a graduate of Jackson High School. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his family; but he had a special love for his horses and enjoyed caring for and riding them. He was gifted with children and had a knack for introducing them to horses and horsemanship. In recent years, he also took pleasure in woodworking, especially in re-purposing wood, and had recently used repurposed wood to update his horse barn.
Alan was a longtime member of Cape County Cowboy Church and formerly served many years on the 4H and FFA Livestock Sale Committee for the annual SEMO District Fair.
Loving survivors include his wife of 11 years, Linda of Jackson; a son, Dustin (Kyla) Estes and their daughter Amya of Sedgewickville; a daughter, Ashley Estes (Justin Riegel) and children Christian, Ava, and Jax; his parents, Wayne and Mary Lou Estes of Jackson; a sister, Kim (Chuck) Crowden; a brother, Darren (Gail) Estes all of Jackson; paternal grandmother, Arvella Estes of Jackson; brothers-in-law, David (Sandy) Schlichter of Colorado, Mark (Joan) Schlichter of Weldon Springs, Missouri; sisters-in-law, Jean (Steve) Moll of Perryville, Missouri, Mary (Dave) Holochuck of Elk Grove, California; and his honorary mom, Juanita "Neeter" Chapman of Jackson. Alan was also anticipating the arrival of two more grandchildren - Ashley and Justin's baby girl in August, and Dustin and Kyla's baby in February.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Claude Estes; maternal grandparents, Hilbert and Beryl Stroder; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, L. Jack and LeVern Schlichter.
