Rev. Albert F. Nyland, III, 87, formerly of Jackson, Missouri, passed away Saturday, October 10, 2015, at his home in Fishers, Indiana.
He was born August 29, 1928, in Chicago, Illinois, to Albert F. and Elly J. Lunde Nyland, II. He was a 1946 graduate of Fenger High School in Chicago, and a 1950 graduate of Carthage College in Carthage, Ill. He attended Chicago Lutheran Seminary in Maywood, Illinois, graduating in 1953. While attending seminary, he served as a supply pastor at St. Peter and St. Paul Lutheran Church in Blue Island, Illinois. He was subsequently ordained May 20, 1953, at Grace Lutheran Church in Springfield, Illinois, during the annual Illinois Synod Convention.
He and Betty Lou Eller were married February 14, 1954, in Centralia, Illinois. They had been married 34 years when Betty passed away May 10, 1988.
Congregations he served include the following: Redeemer Lutheran Church in Centralia, Illinois (1953-1958); St. Paul Lutheran Church in Metropolis, Illinois (1958-1962); St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Fern Creek, Kentucky 1962-1964); Faith Lutheran Church in Logansport, Indiana (1964-1970); Mt. Moriah Lutheran Church in Anna, Illinois (1970-1984); and St. John's Lutheran Church in Pocahontas, Missouri (1984-1994), retiring in 1994. From 1996 to 2006, he served as the Mission Support Pastor for the congregations of Sargent's Chapel Church and Sedgewickville Lutheran Church; and from 2009-2011, he served as permanent supply pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Cairo, Illinois. He served a total of 60 active years in the ministry, and in each place he served, he and Betty became active members of the community. One of his favorite involvements was being concessions manager and a member of the Union County Fair Board in Anna, for close to 20 years.
Loving survivors include two children, Tim (Connie) Nyland of Collinsville, Illinois, and Pastor Nancy Nyland of Fishers, Indiana; six grandchildren, Christopher (Meagan) Nyland of Baltimore, Maryland, Gretchen Nyland and Rachael Nyland of Collinsville, Andrew Nyland of Champaign, Illinois, Tadd Nyland of Fishers, Anh Thu Huynh of Vietnam; a great-grandson, Ragnar Nyland of Baltimore; two sisters, Lora-Lee (the late Henry) Snyder of Walkerton, Indiana, Norma Jean (Charlie) Kesling of Las Vegas, Nevada; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Rev. Nyland also considered these dear friends to be his family: Marisa and Fernando Zancaner and children Gustavo, Vivian, and Nelson of Araras Brazil; Rev. Rebecca Sogge and children, Mikaela and Annika of Wimberley, Texas; and Douglas and Upendo Mmari of Fishers, Indiana.
Arrangements in Indianapolis, Indiana are as follows:
Visitation will be Saturday, October 24, from 1 PM to service time, at Servants of Christ Lutheran Church. At 2 PM, the Bishop William Gafkjen will officiate a memorial service.
Arrangements in Jackson, Missouri were as follows:
Visitation will be Tuesday, October 13, 2015, from 4 PM to service time, at the chapel of McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Tuesday, October 13, 2015, at 7 PM, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Jerry Bailey officiating.
Rev. Nyland will be laid to rest beside Betty, at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Pocahontas, Missouri. Graveside service will be Wednesday, October 14, 2015, at 11 AM.
Memorials may take the form of contributions to Servants of Christ Lutheran Church, Indianapolis, Indiana; or ELCA World Hunger.
