Alvie J. “Al” Lummus, 92, of Cape Girardeau, passed away Monday, April 13, 2026, at Chateau Girardeau in Cape Girardeau.
He was born May 6, 1933, in Farrar, Texas, to Dewey E. and Lillie P. (Lively) Lummus. He married Mary Burns Jenkins on June 29, 1991, in Virginia.
Al played high school football in Mexia, Texas. Following graduation, he continued playing football for three years while serving in the United States Navy from 1950 to 1963. After his military service, he worked for many years as an electrician at the University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia, Missouri.
Al had a passion for racing and enjoyed competing in midget sprint cars and stock cars. Above all, he was a faithful and devoted servant of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He especially enjoyed traveling on mission trips to Haiti, Taiwan, Mexico City and Israel. He was active with Voice of the Martyrs, where he helped package items for those in need and assisted in the distribution of nearly 20,000 Hearts of Fire books.
Loving survivors include his wife of 34 years, Mary Lummus of Cape Girardeau; one son, Richard A. Lummus of Cape Coral, Florida; stepchildren, Scott (Tonya) Jenkins of Dexter, Missouri, and Melody (Kevin) Brown of Swansea, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter-in-law, Debi Lummus; and four siblings, Olen Lummus, Cecil Lummus, Shirley Catoe, and Fern Burgess.
Visitation will be held from 9:30 am until 11:00 am, Monday, April 20, 2026 at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am by Bro. Frank Burgess, at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Dexter City Cemetery with full military honors.
If considering a memorial contribution, the family suggests Fellowship Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau or the Cape County Cowboy Church.
