Listen to Obituary

Anita June Hahs, 91, of Jackson, passed peacefully to her heavenly home on March 19, 2026, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau.

She was born December 7, 1934 near Lilbourn, Missouri to James E. and Evia McKenzie Calhoun. Anita was the oldest of three children.

Anita graduated from Parma High School and then went to work at the Leigh Insurance Agency in Parma. She met James O. Hahs, Jr. at the wedding between her good friend and his cousin. Anita and James married on June 21, 1959. The majority of their 55-year marriage was spent in Sikeston, Missouri, where she was a member of First United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women.

She also was active in the community as a Girl Scout leader. Once the children were raised, she became a bookkeeper for Matthews Cotton Company, working each year through the ginning season. In 2006, James and Anita moved to Jackson, Missouri, and became members of New McKendree United Methodist Church.

Anita’s true dedication was to home and family. Known as “Neena” to her grandchildren and great grandchildren, Neena and Grandpa’s house in Sikeston and later Jackson, was the hub of countless family events, whether holiday dinners, trick-or-treating, Christmas get-togethers, Easter egg dying, craft sessions, babysitting, or just spending time with family. In her later years she found simple joy in filling her flower beds with vibrant color, watching the antics of squirrels from her kitchen window, and playing her piano daily.

Loving survivors include her sister, Linda (Danny) Greeson of Eldon, MO, her children Janet (Doug) Sanders of Jackson, Patrick (Donna Gail) Hahs of Almo, KY, and Ellen Flentge of Cape Girardeau, grandchildren Heather (Casey) Dodd, Krista (Mike) Taylor, Roger (Mikayla) Clements, David Clements, Tori (Justin) Urig, and great-grandchildren Alexis Boyles, Khloe & Kolton Dodd, Mason & Ella Taylor, Aubrianna, Amelia, & Jocelyn Clements, and Isla Urig.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, her brother James Calhoun, her beautiful granddaughter Natalie Renee Hahs, and son-in-law Richard Flentge.

Our Neena will be greatly missed and long remembered with love.
