Boyd Summers

Boyd Summers Jr., 96, of Jackson, passed away Sunday, December 25, 2022, at Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

He was born June 19, 1926, in Millersville, Mo., to Boyd and Bertha (Sander) Summer Sr.  He and Juanita Statler were married July 7, 1950, in Chaffee, Missouri.  They had been married 69 years when Juanita passed away August 16, 2019.

Boyd was a PFC in the U.S. Army, serving honorably, during WW2, from November 20, 1944, to July 29, 1946.

He worked many years as a supervisor at HWI.

Boyd was a member of New McKendree United Methodist Church of Jackson, where he served as an usher and lay leader. He was a former member of First United Methodist Church of Chaffee for over fifty years. There he served six years as Sunday School Supervisor, taught Sunday school, was a member of Methodist Men, was a lay leader for several years, and chaired several church committees.

Other memberships were of VFW Post 3127 (life member), Masonic Lodge # 615 in Chaffee (past worshipful master), American Legion Post 158 in Jackson and its Honor Guard (former chaplain of both).

Boyd is survived by two children, Carolyn S. “Sue” (Jim) Franke of Hillsboro, Ohio, and David Boyd (Patricia) Summers of Cape Girardeau; a sister, Elvira (Gib) Urhahn; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, and several nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife; and four siblings, Virginia (Quinton) Felty, Bertha (Wib) Haupt, Winifred (Ralph) Dumey, and Lloyd (Wilma) Summers of Jackson.

Visitation is from 10 to 11:45 a.m., Friday, December 30, 2022, at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.  At 11:45 a.m., Friday, guests are invited to observe an American Legion Honor Guard service, immediately followed by the funeral service conducted by the Rev. Jimmie Corbin.  Burial and military honors will follow at Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson.

If considering a memorial contribution, the family suggests the Jackson Senior Center or New McKendree United Methodist Church.
