Doris Morene Hanschen (Peggy), of Gordonville, Missouri, arrived at her heavenly home singing praises to her Savior on June 10, 2026, just shy of her 102nd birthday. She passed away in her home, as she requested, in the loving care of her favorite niece, Elaine Riley of Humboldt, Nebraska.
She was born on June 24, 1924, to parents, Fred and Fannie Albin in rural Humboldt, Nebraska. She graduated at age 16 from Honey Creek High School and later moved to California to live with her older sister and work in a war plant during WWII. There she met the love of her life, Junior Martin “Pete” Hanschen, as he returned from serving overseas in WWII, and two months later, married her Marine on January 19, 1946. Three daughters were born to this union, Sheila (Raferd) Kaiser, Barbara (Alan) Sulfridge, and Miriam (Brad) Mouser.
Peggy spent her life serving her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at Christ Lutheran Church in Gordonville, where she served as a children and youth Sunday School Teacher for many years. She began a widows’ group after Pete passed, over 20 years ago, which met once a month in her home after church, and continued until the end of 2025. She loved having friends and family in her home and was known for her delicious doughnuts. She had a generous heart and always wanted to help and serve those in need as she was one of the first volunteers when the Teen Challenge Thrift Store opened in Cape Girardeau and continued her service for many years after.
Loving survivors include her three daughters and their husbands, grandchildren Anthony (Dawn) Kaiser, Aaron (Courtney) Kaiser, John Cody, Katherine (Jake) Fritchel, Michael (Heidi) Mouser, Morene Mouser and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Phyllis Taylor, Dottie Lee, Ken Albin, Glennis Dolan, and Ola Riley.
Many thanks to Crown Hospice, and of course to her niece, Elaine, along with neighbors, Wanda Aufdenburg, who came to sing hymns with her for the last several years, and Deanna Ware who would check in on her often as she loved their visits and made her last days more pleasant.
Visitation is from 9 to 11 a.m., Monday, June 15, 2026, at Christ Lutheran Church in Gordonville. The Rev. Jacob May will conduct the funeral service at 11 a.m., Monday, June 15, at the church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Christ Lutheran Church.
Arrangements by McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.
