Dorris "Red" A. Huey, 88, of Cape Girardeau passed away Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2016 at Southeast Missouri Hospital.
He was born Nov. 22, 1928 in Blodgett, MO, son of Simon P. and Elsie Jennings Huey. He married his best friend Mavis Carter in Chaffee on Mar. 6, 1948. She passed away Feb. 1, 2006.
Red grew up in a farming family and had a paper route in Chaffee where he was proud of the fact that he knew every family in Chaffee. He graduated from Chaffee High School where he excelled in sports baseball, football and basketball. Due to his formidable athletic ability he was known as the "Wild Horse of the Osage". He spent several years working for Frito-Lay as a district manager and many years in the grocery industry. After retirment he and Mavis volunteered full-time with the Southern Baptist Home Mission Board. They spent three years in New York City volunteering in prisons and hospitals with the Inner City Baptist Association. They also volunteered for fifteen years in Cherokee, North Carolina, at the local Indian Reservation and with the Navaho Indian Reservation in Farmington, New Mexico. Additionaly he and Mavis also worked with Gideons International. He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather as well as an avid sports fan.
Loving survivors include two daughters Sherry Lynne Pressley and husband Wayne of Jackson, and Jana Leigh Saxon and husband Jim of Independence, MO, a sister Faye Sanders of Chaffee and a brother Ray Huey of Madison, IL.
Also surviving are three grandchildren; Jamie Leigh Saxon of Independence, Jared Allen Saxon and wife Syrena of Lees Summit, and Sarah Lynn Thompson and husband Andrew of Cape and four great-grandchildren; Greyson, Isaiah "Otis" and Molly Saxon and Rowan Thompson
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and five brothers; Emerson, Emit, Joe, Simon and Dennis Huey.
Friends may call Saturday, Dec. 31, 2016 from 9 to 11:00 AM at Mccombs Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.
Funeral service will be on Saturday at 11:00 am at the Funeral Home with the Pastor Larry Salmon officiating. Interment will follow in Bollinger County Memorial Park in Marble Hill at a later date.
Memorials may take the form of contributions to Gideons International at gideons.org or Lynwood Baptist Church for the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering.
