Elizabeth "Liz" (Hitt) O'Neal

March 22, 1932 — April 25, 2020

Rural Cape Girardeau, Missouri

Surrounded by her loving family, G. Elizabeth “Liz” O’Neal, 88, passed away April 25, 2020 at her home in rural Cape Girardeau.

She was born March 22, 1932, in Arbor, Missouri, to Arthur and Sarah Moreland Hitt. She was a 1948 graduate of Delta High School.

On March 18, 1955, Liz and James Edward “Jim” O’Neal were married at the Baptist Church in Arbor, Missouri.  The couple resided in rural Cape Girardeau.  They were members of Christ Lutheran Church in Gordonville, where Liz enjoyed helping with church suppers.

Liz worked 10 years at the shoe factory.  Thereafter, she was Jim’s right hand on the farm.  She liked to garden, can, make sausage, and help care for their registered beagle hounds.  She especially enjoyed watching her grandsons play sports and watching her son coach.

Loving survivors include her husabnd of 65 years, Jim O’Neal of Cape Girardeau; a son, James L. “Lynn” (Wendy) O’Neal of Cape Girardeau; two grandsons, Jonathan (Courtney) O’Neal of Little Rock, Arkansas, and Brock O’Neal of Cape Girardeau; five sisters:  Juanita (the late Louis) Myers of Randles, Missouri; Jane (David) O’Connell of Cape Girardeau; Annie (Bill) Ashcraft of Kansas City, Missouri; Shirley (the late Randy) Bohnert of Oak Ridge, and Clara (the late Gene) Phillips of Cape Girardeau.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Drucille Finley and Mary Shubert; and a brother, Ray Hitt.

The family wishes to convey their sincere appreciation to the staff of Elara Caring Hospice and Dr. Rodric Crist for their dedication to Liz’s care the past several years.

The family will announce a memorial gathering at a later date.  At this time, they will honor Liz with a private service at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.  She will be laid to rest next to other family members at Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson.
