Fred Nelson McLain, 89, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, June 7, 2023, surrounded by his family, at his home in Jackson. He was born November 12, 1933, in Neelys Landing, Missouri, to Roy Wilson and Laura Gussie Koeppel McLain. He and Dolly McGary were married July 15, 1955, in Meridian, Mississippi. Two daughters were born to their union, Cindi and Lisa. Fred was an Airman First Class in the U.S. Air Force, serving honorably from January 19, 1952, to January 18, 1956. Thereafter, he became a lifelong OTR truck driver, earning many safety awards and even an award for his neat appearance. Fred was a longtime, active member of St. John's United Church of Christ, north of Jackson. In earlier years, the family liked to camp. In recent years, Fred and Dolly enjoyed spending time with their family. Loving survivors include his wife of nearly 68 years, Dolly McLain; and two daughters, Cindi (the late Rick) Iverson and Lisa (Basil) Holmes, all of Jackson; seven grandchildren: Nicki (Jered) Roberts; Shea (Blake) Popp; Megen (Tyler) McMahon; Michelle (Chris) Claxton; Haley (John) Welch; Kacey (Spencer) Flack; Cody (Hannah) McMinn; 22 grandchildren; and three siblings, Norma (the late Henry) Shipp of Cape Girardeau; Jesse (Donna) McLain of Neelys Landing; John (Cheryl) McLain of Cape Girardeau; a sister-in-law, Jewel (the late Roy) McLain of Jackson; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, David Nelson McLain; his parents; eight siblings, Richard (Dora) McLain; Glenn (Dorothy) McLain; Roy McLain; Ruth Burchyett; Marie (Arthur "Tiny") Hampton; Erma (Joe) McDowell; Betty Melvin; James (Jeannie) McLain; and a son-in-law, Rick Iverson. Visitation is from 11:30 a.m. to service time, Sunday, June 11, 2023, at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson. Dr. Rodney Pensel will conduct the funeral at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, June 11, at the funeral home. Interment and military honors will follow at Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson. Memorials may take the form of contributions to St. John's United Church of Christ.
