George C. Doemel, 90, of Jackson, passed away Saturday, January 24, 2026, at the home of a daughter in Eureka, Missouri, surrounded by loving family.
He was born April 30, 1935, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, to Curtis Leonard and Marie Peerenboom Doemel. George joined the U.S. Marines a few days before his 17th birthday in 1952 and was named a Platoon Leader at the age of 17 years. He was honorably discharged in 1955, the same year he married Shirley Ann Vaile on June 18, at St. Joseph’s Church in Green Bay, Wisconsin. They had been married nearly 58 years when Shirley passed away March 30, 2013.
George and Shirley built their first house in Green Bay. George had a great career at Procter & Gamble for 38 years, where he started sweeping floors and soon became a self-taught mechanical engineer and manager. He started his P&G journey in Green Bay, at the Charmin paper plant, and from there was promoted to various positions with Pampers/Luv’s diapers in Cheboygan, Michigan; Mehoopany, Pennsylvania; Modesto, California; Bonn, Germany; Pescara, Italy; and finally, Cape Girardeau, where he retired in 1994. In 1988, they built their dream home on a small lake, (Bella Vista) in Jackson, where so many great memories and traditions were had. His children are so thankful for the many adventures and life lessons they learned throughout George’s career journey, with opportunities to travel the world, but more importantly to see his amazing work ethic and love of life, which he instilled in each of them.
In retirement, George continued his clock repairing hobby which then grew into a business, where he befriended every client he had, making many house visits to personally set up grandfather and cuckoo clocks that he had carefully rebuilt. He finally retired from his clock business in 2024, when macular degeneration took his eyesight from him.
George was a natural leader and was president of many organizations over the years - Archery Club, Band Boosters, Lake HOA Committee to name a few. He was an amazing husband and father, loved his role as Grandfather - attending as many events, activities, graduations as he possibly could, and he was a good friend to many!
Other things George especially enjoyed were traveling, taking trips and cruises all over the world; our “three days of Thanksgiving” and any reason to get the whole family together; bowling; dancing; golfing; fishing with the grandchildren; antiquing; fixing everything he could get his hands on; listening to good music with a glass of wine; socializing at the gym; and watching the Green Bay Packers (where he took Shirley on their first date). Until the very end, he listened to Packer Cheesehead Radio every day!
To cherish his memory, he leaves four children, Chris Doemel of Atlanta, Georgia; Todd (Debbie) Doemel of Jacksonville, Florida; Terri (late Randy) Fluegge and Julene (Tom) Tojo both of St. Louis; former daughter-in-law, Carol Doemel of Atlanta, Georgia; grandchildren: Jessica (Scott) Pool Rickard; Elizabeth (Dan) Gantner; Sarah (Christian) Oldenburg; Curtis (Kayla) Doemel; Sydney Doemel, Jordan (Colton) Tojo-Robbins; and Jenna Tojo; great-grandchildren: Annalise Pool, Benjamin, George, Lillian and Sam Gantner, Samantha and Olivia Oldenburg, Cora Jayne Doemel, Rhodes Tojo-Robbins; a sister, Jean Doemel of Oshkosh; and his best friend, Dixie Jones.
He was preceded in death by his wife; grandchildren, Samantha Elizabeth and Scott Michael Doemel; his parents; and four sisters, Mary, Jill, Cathy, Sally.
