Glenda "Sue"" (Allen) Sample

June 8, 1946 — February 5, 2022

Cape Girardeau, Missouri

Glenda Sue Allen Sample, 75, of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, passed away Saturday, February 5, 2022, at Jackson Manor in Jackson. She was born June 8, 1946 in Sturdivent, Missouri to Georgia Hill who two years later married Herman Elwood Allen. They raised Sue and her two brothers in Cape Girardeau. Sue would have graduated early at age 16, but she dropped out of Central High School three months before graduation. She later achieved her GED in 1970. Sue married Gary Sample on October 12, 1963. They divorced in 2006. She raised their two delightful daughters in the years between. Sue enjoyed music and loved singing. She and her family attended New Testament Baptist Church where she performed in the New Testament Quartet, with her husband and two other members of the church. They often opened for The Singing Faithmen. The family moved to Liberty Baptist Church in the mid-seventies and assisted in starting Liberty Baptist Christian School. She passed her love of music onto her daughters, who were often involved in concerts and plays in the school. She continued supporting the arts through them, helping the students with plays and fund raising events until their graduation. Sue had many hobbies over the years. She loved to sew; making the girls' beautifully designed clothes as they were growing up. She commonly worked with jute and cord, creating such things as plant hangers and key chains. She taught herself to crochet everything from baby shoes and jackets to afghans and bedspreads. More than anything though, she loved to read. Sue always had a book or two by her side, even once she switched to reading on her Kindle. She also liked watching ID. Over the course of her career, Sue wore many hats. As a teenager she worked at the Rialto Theater and A&W. She worked at Southeast Hospital as a nurse's assistant, mostly in OB. In 1974 she helped to open the newly build Kmart store; where she worked as office manager for over twenty years. She worked a few years for Wal-Mart in lawn and garden. She finally found her passion working with animals when she worked at Golden Cat. Then moving to Southeast Missouri Pets formerly The Humane Society of Southeast Missouri, she worked in tireless pursuit of finding pets safe and loving homes while simultaneously working as an office manager at Cape Small Animal Clinic for Dr. Koch. She retired in 2017. Sue was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Harold Lee Hill and his wife Rosie. Loving survivors include her daughters, Tammy Sue (Mike) of Jackson, MO, and Dawn Lynn (Chris), of Cape Girardeau, MO. Her two grandsons, Trevor Biri and Spencer (Emily) Biri, both of Jackson, and her great-grandson Porter Atlas. Her brother Mearlin (Darlene) Allen of Cape Girardeau, MO, four nieces and three nephews. Per her request, there will be no visitation or service. A private memorial will be held later in the week for immediate family. For those wishing to give memorials, the family asks that donations be made in her name to the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri or your favorite animal sanctuary.
