Hazel Yount, 95, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2024, at Fountainbleau Lodge in Cape Girardeau. She was born Jan. 27, 1929, in Detroit, Michigan, to Charles and Sophia Mehringer Stowe. She and Homer Edward Yount were married Nov. 27, 1960, in Pensacola, Florida, and he passed away Dec. 28, 2000. Hazel grew up in Michigan, graduating from high school and then moving to Miami, Florida, to attend nursing school. Upon graduation, she moved to Pensacola for work and met Homer, who was serving in the Navy. They married and Hazel accompanied Homer through multiple duty assignments and stations, moving to Cape Girardeau in 1972 when Homer retired from the Navy. Hazel went to work at Southeast Hospital, now Mercy, and worked there until her retirement in 1994. She was very involved with her church, Westminster Presbyterian in Cape Girardeau. She loved her family and babysat for her great-granddaughter well into her 80s. Her love for animals abounded, having multiple birds and dogs. She loved going to lunch at the senior center with her friends. Survivors include her son, Brett (Angelia) Yount; granddaughter, Paige Yount; grandson, Benjamin Yount, and his fiancee, Annie Henning, all of Cape Girardeau, along with a great-granddaughter, Leigha Yount. Also surviving are brothers, Lloyd (Anita) Stowe and James (Gloria) Stowe, both of Traverse City, Michigan, and Raymond Stowe of Phoenix, Arizona. Hazel was preceded by her husband, Homer Yount; brothers, Charles, Richard, Edwin and George Stowe; and sisters, Mildred Gregory and Irene Kulling. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, March 1, at McCombs Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 1, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Ellen Gurnon officiating. Burial will follow at Patton Cemetery near Patton. Please make memorial contributions to Southeast Missouri Pets or The Alzheimer's Association.
