Rev. Jerry D. Statler, 91, of Cape Girardeau, passed away Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at the Lutheran Home.
Rev. Statler was born September 25, 1931, in Sedgewickville, son of Lloyd and Marie (Hahs) Statler. He and Elizabeth "Betty" Sander were married September 4, 1953, in Cape Girardeau. She preceded him in death on November 25, 1999. He and Mary Jane Bryant were married April 14, 2001. She survives.
Rev. Statler was a 1949 graduate of Cape Central High School. During this time, while attending Grace United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau, the Lord called him into the ministry. He was a 1953 graduate of Central Methodist College and a 1960 graduate of Eden Theological Seminary, and was then ordained into the United Methodist Church.
He served many churches in the Missouri conference. He also served on many boards for the United Methodist Church. After retirement in 1992, he volunteered in various capacities including Stephen Ministry, the American Bible Society, Emmaus, and mission trips to Appalachia.
In addition to his loving wife, Rev. Statler is survived by four children, Beverly (Brent) Stewart of St. Louis, Mark (Jennifer) Statler of Eugene, MO, Thomas (Jennifer) Statler of Kansas City, and Stephen Statler of Cape Girardeau; nine grandchildren, Tommy (Liz) Statler of Medford, OR, Craig (Kaylee) Stewart, Emma Stewart and Deanna Statler all of St. Louis, Bethany Statler of O'Fallon, MO, Caroline (Ben) Williams of Des Moines, IA, Jonathan Statler of Cape Girardeau, Andrew Statler of Columbia, MO and Macie Statler of Eugene, Mo; and a brother, Gene (Sherry) Statler of Sebring, FL.
Rev. Statler was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Betty; and a brother, Don Statler.
Visitation will be Saturday, February 25, 2023, from 9:30-11 AM at Grace United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau. Funeral service will be Saturday, February 25, 2023, at 11 AM at the church with Rev. Dr. Jame Hahs officiating. Burial will follow in the Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery in Gordonville.
