John H. Johannes, 77, of Jackson, passed away Tuesday, June 27, 2023 at the Missouri Veterans Home, in Cape Girardeau, MO.
He was born August 10, 1945, in St. Louis, MO, to John “Milton” and Emilie (Holekamp) Johannes. He and Joanna (Dilling) Johannes were married August 19, 1967, in St. Louis. Two children were born to their union, Rachel, and John “Jack”.
John was a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau.
He honorably served in the U.S. Army from Nov. 8, 1967, to Aug. 7, 1969, with over 10 months in Vietnam. For his service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device; 1 Overseas Service Bar; Army Commendation Medal; Republic of Vietnam Service Medal; and the Good Conduct Medal.
John had many passions and hobbies, but he was best known for his fascination with classic automobiles. He restored many vehicles from Cadillacs to an antique 40-ton wrecker. He had many friends across the country that he shared this hobby with. He was also a devoted Rotarian with the Rotary Club of Jackson.
Loving survivors include two children, Rachel (Jeff) Keech of Chesterfield, Missouri and Jack (Erin) Johannes of Leavenworth, Kansas; four grandchildren, Sadie and David Keech of Chesterfield, Missouri, and Katelyn and William Johannes of Leavenworth, Kansas; a brother, Jim (the late Erma) Johannes of Jackson; and several step-siblings, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joanna (Dilling) Johannes, father, Milton Johannes; his mother, Emilie Johannes; Sister Emilie Lysell; brother-in-law Kenneth Dilling; and sister-in-law, Erma Johannes.
A memorial visitation will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at the funeral home. Friends and family will be asked to share their memories of John.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Missouri Veterans Home Foundation, 2400 Veterans Memorial Drive, Cape Girardeau, MO 63701. Please denote your check “In Memory of John Johannes.”
