Listen to Obituary

John Jeffery Walter, 63, of Jackson passed away Thursday, March 12, 2026, at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO.

He was born June 8, 1962, in Cape Girardeau, son of Alfred G. “Pop” and Arlene Louise Krueger Walter. John and Valerie “Velvet” Legrand were married April 24, 1982, at Hanover Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau.

John was always “piddling” with something, whether it was working in the yard, woodworking, or preparing for a camping trip. He enjoyed listening to Elvis and found happiness in life’s simple pleasures. Most of all, John cherished the time he spent with his family, especially with his wife of 44 years, Velvet. He took great pride in his grandchildren and was their number one fan, rarely missing a chance to cheer them on at their various events.

Loving survivors include his wife, Velvet, and their three children, Joe (McKenzie) Walter of St. Louis, MO; Jessica (Tim) Stearns of Jackson; and Josh Walter and fiancée (Laura Petree) of Columbia, MO; and his grandchildren, Ella, Beckett, Lexi, Kaylee, and Kasen.

Also surviving are John’s siblings, Jane Cotner, Jim (Pam) Walter, Mike (Lisa) Walter, and Susie (Don) Howard along with many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

To honor John, a Celebration of Life will be open for friends and family on Sunday, March 22, at Lloyd’s of Jackson from 2:00pm – 4:00pm.
