Joyce Bernice (Burger) Schmitz

Joyce Bernice Schmitz, 81, of Jackson, passed away Sunday, January 9, 2022, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. Joyce was born May 30, 1940, to Lester Charles and Stella (Park) Burger in Cape Girardeau. She and Richard L. Schmitz were married July 26, 1958, in Collinsville, IL and they had three children. Joyce was a former member of LaCroix United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau. In Joyce's earlier years, she enjoyed square dancing and was an avid girl scout leader. Later in life she loved coloring and sharing her coloring with her family. Joyce is survived by three children, April (Tom) Rhodes of Jackson, Annette Horman of Columbia, and Chad (Heather) Schmitz of Chesterfield; grandchildren, Lindsey (Matt) Hale of Jackson, Jennifer (Chris) McQuay of Jackson, Kyle Seabaugh of Cape Girardeau, James Horman of State College, PA, and William Horman of Columbia; a brother, Marvin Burger of Zalma; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Joyce is preceded in death by her parents, and five siblings, Betty Kinder, Max Burger, Lester Burger Jr., Samelia Burger, and Gerald Burger.

A memorial visitation will be held Wednesday, January 26, 2022, from 11 AM until time of service at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center.  Memorial service will be at 1 PM with Pastor Kim Holman officiating.  Inurnment will follow in the Cape County Memorial Park Cemetery.
