June (Head) Stone

Mary June Stone, 87, of Jackson passed away Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at the Monticello House in Jackson.

She was born November 16, 1930, in Ste. Genevieve County, Missouri, to James “Ches” and Edith Irene Martin Head.  She and Nelson Stone were married August 15, 1953, in Coffman, Missouri, south of Ste. Genevieve.  Four children were born to their union.

June was a graduate of Esther High School in Ste. Genevieve County and Southwest Baptist College.  She was a teacher at the former Crossroads School in Madison County.  She and Nelson moved to Jackson in the late 1950’s.  They owned and operated the former Merry Lea Animal Clinic in Jackson.  June owned and operated a craft shop in Jackson and the former Cow Belle, a soft-serve ice-cream shop, next door to the clinic.

Prior to her illness, June was a very active member of First Baptist Church in Jackson, where she sang in the choir, served as a Sunday School teacher in the Children’s Department, other children’s programs, and was active in WMU.  Other affiliations and activities include the Missouri Veterinary Medical Auxiliary (MVMA) and Southeast Hospital Auxiliary and Volunteer Services.  June had an uncanny ability to entertain children and keep them interested in learning.  She also enjoyed sewing, quilting, embroidery, painting, and reading.

Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Dr. Nelson Stone of Jackson; three children, Mara Beth (Randy) Webster of Nixa, Missouri, Barry (Elaine) Stone of Cape Girardeau, and Libby Stone of Tucson, Arizona; a sister, Jean Jenkerson of Farmington, Missouri; five grandchildren, Jared (Cindy) Webster, Damon (Natalie) Webster, Justin (Ashley) Stone, Melody (Phillip) DeCoursey, and Jordan Stone; and six great-grandchildren, Addison, Molly, Landon, Ada, and Charlie Webster, and Ronin DeCoursey.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, Alan James Stone; her parents, a brother, three sisters, an infant brother, and an infant sister.

Visitation is from noon to service time, Sunday, October 7, 2018, at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.

The funeral service will be at 3 p.m., Sunday, October 7, 2018, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Elijah Allen officiating.  Burial will follow at Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson.

The family suggests that contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Diabetes Association.
