Kenneth E. Abernathy, 89, of Jackson passed away Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at his home. He was born on February 8, 1936, in St. Louis, to Linus and Bertha Hermina Voges Abernathy. He and Mary Lou Fronabarger were married on October 4, 1958, at Oak Ridge Baptist Church. Kenny graduated from Jackson High School in 1953 and dedicated eight years to the Missouri National Guard. He spent 44 years working for the City of Jackson, retiring in 2002 as the electric line supervisor. For several years, Kenny was also a volunteer firefighter. Kenny was devoted to his Christian faith and was an active member of Emanuel United Church of Christ since 1952. He enjoyed fishing on Kentucky Lake with his buddy Dave Gohn, vegetable gardening, bird watching, looked forward to deer hunting each year, and above all, cherished moments with his grandchildren and family, Loving survivors include his wife of 66 years Mary Lou Abernathy of Jackson; three daughters, Cindy (Jim) Bromley, Pam Brown both of Jackson, and Laurie (Jake) Hency of Fruitland; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren: Justin (Keisha) Bromley and their children Justin Jr. and Jamie of Burfordville, Kaci Brown and children, Destiny, Savannah, Dalasia and Aniyah of Cape Girardeau, Tyler Bromley and son, "little" Richard of Jackson, Austin Abernathy and son "little" Kenny of Jackson and Dustin "Tater" Cook of Fruitland; a sister, Arlene Gaines of Poplar Bluff; and sister-in-law, Pat Abernathy of Jackson. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Leroy Abernathy. The visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 1, 2025, at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson. The Rev. Sam Roethemeyer will conduct the funeral service at 11 a.m., Monday, June 2, 2025, at the funeral home with full military honors following the service. Interment will follow at Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson. If considering a memorial contribution, the family suggests Emanuel United Church of Christ.
