Lyndall L. Liley

April 1, 1926 — November 30, 2024

Jackson, Missouri

Lyndall Ledo Liley, 98, passed away peacefully on November 30, 2024, at the Missouri Veteran’s Home in Cape Girardeau.

Lyndall was born on April 1, 1926, in Grassy, Missouri to William “Wild Bill” and Leona Adeline “Addie” Gatlin Liley.  As a child, he attended Gregory School in rural Bollinger County.

Lyndall was inducted in the U.S. Army on September 9, 1944, at the beginning of his senior year at Lutesville High School. He served in the Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns and when World War II ended, he served as a military policeman in Germany.  He received a WW II Victory Medal, a European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 2 Bronze Battle Stars, 2 Overseas Service Bars, an Army of Occupation Medal with Germany Clasp, and a Good Conduct Medal. Upon his honorable discharge and return home in July of 1946, he completed his education at Lutesville High School.

Lyndall and Jean Daphine Kirkpatrick were united in marriage on July 13, 1947, by the Reverend Dale Porter at the home of Daphine’s mother in Grassy.  Lyndall worked at the shoe factory in Marble Hill, and together, Lyndall and Daphine sold Miracle Maid cookware in the evenings, cooking meals in the homes of prospective buyers.  In 1953 they moved to Jackson, where he worked at Rozier’s. In 1963, he began his 26-year career as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service in Jackson, retiring in 1989.

Lyndall was a member of Crossroads Fellowship Church in Jackson, and a former member of First Baptist Church in Jackson, and Grassy Friendship General Baptist Church in Grassy.   He was also a member of Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158 in Jackson.

Lyndall will be remembered for the quiet, gentle manner in which he lived his life; his love of hunting, fishing, and catching minnows in a Mason jar (for this, he was dubbed the “Minnowman”); his love of sports, especially watching his grandson and great-grandsons play football; the way he would make up goofy songs to go along with whatever he was doing at the time; and his silly riddles and practical jokes.

Loving survivors include a son, Rodney (Karen) Liley of Evansville, Indiana; a daughter, Lisa (Steve) Hanschen of Jackson; a daughter-in-law, Laura Liley, of Grassy; and a son-in-law, Brent Eastman, of Cape Girardeau; grandchildren, Jason (Katy) Liley, Alisha (Nathan) Turley, Michelle Liley, Katie (Reid) Schultheis, Cameron (Hannah) Liley, Danielle Nussbaum, Caitlin (Brent) Newsome, Madison (Scottie) Thomas, and Graeme Moore; step-grandchildren, Wesley (Holly) Borgfield, Wendy Wilson, and Clint (Ashlei) Eastman; numerous great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Dean Kirkpatrick and David (Janet) Kirkpatrick; sister-in-law, Ora Mae Kirkpatrick; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lyndall was preceded in death by his parents and his wife; son, Michael Liley; daughter, Sandra Eastman; brothers, Jesse, Elwood, Brooksie, and Glenn; and sisters, Luella, Lillian, and Hazel.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m., Wednesday, December 4, 2024, at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson. At 11 a.m., the Honor Guard of Altenthal-Joerns Post 158 will conduct an American Legion Ceremony.   Immediately following, the Revs. Brian Anderson and Matthew Cromer will conduct the funeral service.  A special eulogy will also be given by his granddaughter, Madison Thomas.  Military Honors and graveside committal will follow at Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson.

Memorials may be made in the form of contributions to Crossroads Fellowship in Jackson or the Missouri Veterans Home Foundation in Cape Girardeau.
