Mary Ella (Mcdowell) Morton

Mary Ella Morton, 91, of Jackson, passed away Saturday evening, June 22, 2024. She was born November 17, 1932, in Cape Girardeau, to Robert Lee and Ilda Shaner McDowell. She married Robert James Morton in August 1954, who preceded her in death in May 1997. She was also preceded in death by brothers Robert McDowell and Gary McDowell. Survivors include a son, Michael Robert Morton, and a daughter, Sherrie Lynn Troxel. Also surviving are five grandchildren: Matthew (Jaime) Morton, Steffan Troxel, Alex Anne Troxel, Kristian (Brittany) Troxel, Kyleigh (Guy) Gehr, and great-grandchildren Carsen, Tallis, Beckham, and Maverick. In addition, Mary is survived by her sister, Brenda (John) Keene, and friend of the family, Jill Mills. Mary graduated from Jackson High School and Southeast Missouri State University, with a B. S. in Education. She retired in 1992 after a thirty-two-year career teaching second grade in the Jackson R-2 district. Mary's Christian faith was an essential aspect of her character. She taught Sunday School for fifty-four years, was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Jackson, and a preeminent mentor to the growing community of Pleasant Hill Church in Fruitland. Her favorite activities included reading, interior decorating, flower arranging, and ultimately, spending time with her beloved family. She will be remembered by her kindness, dedication to her community, and everlasting love for family and friends. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, June 28, at McCombs Funeral Home with Rev. Karen Dumey officiating. Visitation will precede the service, beginning at 10:00 a.m. "Grass withers, and flowers fall, but the Word of God endures forever," (Isaiah 40:8). The family suggests that contributions be made to Jackson R-2 School Foundation or Church or Charity of donor's choice.
