Matthew L. Stewart, 40, of Jackson, passed away Wednesday, July 20, 2022, in Jackson.
He was born July 15, 1982, in Cape Girardeau, to Mark and Lizabeth Boone Stewart.
Matthew was a 2001 graduate of Kelly High School in Benton, Missouri.
Mathew joined the U.S. Marines on May 8, 2001. He served in Operation Iraq Freedom as a Flight Equipment Technician. His five-year career included 11 months of foreign service and nearly 12 months of sea service on the USS Kearsarge. He was awarded the following: Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal; Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (2 Awards); Global War on Terrorism Service Ribbon; National Defense Service Medal; Iraq Campaign Medal; Navy Unit Commendation; Certificate of Commendation; and a Presidential Unit Citation-Navy. He was honorably discharged May 7, 2006. Thereafter, he was a union sheet metal worker.
Loving survivors include two daughters, Alivia and Abigail Stewart, and their mother, Melissa, of Navarre, Florida; his father, Mark Stewart of Jackson; two stepbrothers, Trevor Johnson of Benton, Missouri, and William Hunter Johnson of South Carolina; a nephew, Tucker Stewart of Jackson; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins on both sides of his family.
He was preceded in death by his mother; a brother, Paul Stewart; his stepmother, Lisa Pruitt Stewart; paternal grandparents and maternal grandparents.
A memorial visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Wednesday, August 3, 2022, at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson. Military honors will be observed at 12 p.m. Matthew will privately be laid to rest at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield, Missouri.
