Melvin Ray "Sonny" Campbell, 79, of Cape Girardeau, passed away Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at Jackson Manor Nursing Home in Jackson, Missouri.
He was born July 14, 1945, near Wardell, Missouri, to Samuel Sr. and Georgianna Murry Campbell. In his teenage years, Sonny accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior. He attended high school in Portageville and then lived a few years in Chicago, Illinois, a city he always loved. During the Vietnam War Era, he honorably served in the U.S. Army, from October 6, 1965, to October 5, 1967. He received a bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of Texas Arlington.
Sonny lived many years in Waco and Fort Worth, Texas, where he became an ordained deacon. He was a supervisor at Plaza Medical Center of Fort Worth. There, he met and married Beverly Porter. He later returned to Cape Girardeau, living the rest of his life near his family. God was the head of Sonny's life. He dearly loved his family. He was an avid sports fan, and especially enjoyed the Chicago Cubs.
To cherish his memory, Melvin leaves a daughter, Sheila K. Campbell of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; a grandson, Pastor Quinton A. Campbell of Vernon, Texas; siblings, Edna Summers of Chicago, Samuel Campbell, Jr.; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; former wife, Beverly Campbell; siblings: Hubert Campbell; Hershel (Lena Mae) Campbell; Martha Agnes (Lee) Mabins; Virginia Eva Hardin; Mable (Joe) Willhite; Girlie McCoy; Geraldine (Bobby) Cozart; and a grandson, Sean Colbe Campbell.
Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., Friday, December 6, 2024, at McCombs Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.
Pastor Teresa Campbell of In His Image Ministries will conduct the funeral service at 11 a.m., Friday, at the funeral home.
Military honors will follow at 2 p.m., Friday, at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield, Missouri.
