Melvin J. Steinnerd

Melvin J. Steinnerd, 94, of Jackson passed away Friday, June 04, 2021, at his residence.

He was born April 15, 1927, in Leopold, Missouri, son of Joseph H. and Katherine “Katie” Landewee Steinnerd.  He and Rita M. Kirn were married Dec. 27, 1950 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Jackson.

Melvin grew up in Leopold, and was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, most of his life. He was a farmer, and was the owner/operator of Steinnerd Spreading Service and worked at Lutesville Shell and Feed.  The Steinnerds moved to Jackson in 1986; he then drove a truck for Danny Gilder, Inc. before working as a janitor at First Baptist Church in Jackson.  He was a past Grand Knight with Leopold St. Isidore Knights of Columbus 5898, and was a devoted member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.   Melvin was an avid gardener winning ribbons at the SEMO District Fair, for his gladiolas, and he loved working on antique tractors with his sons.

Loving survivors include six children Victoria (Owen) Scherer of Jackson, Tim  Steinnerd of Leopold, Steven (Debbie) Steinnerd of Perryville, Sarah Steinnerd of Jackson, Lisa (Tony) Cook of Whitewater, and Nancy Steinnerd of Jackson; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Geraldine Elfrink of Leopold and Eloise Nenninger of St. Genevieve, Missouri.

In addition to his wife of nearly 44 years, he was preceded in death by three sons, James Steinnerd, Lewis Steinnerd and David Steinnerd; a daughter, Bertha Steinnerd; two sisters, Mary Jansen, Irma Stause; and two brothers, Norbert Henry Steinnerd and Herman J. Steinnerd.

Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Monday, June 7, 2021 at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson. Parish prayers will be at 6 p.m, followed by a rosary, led by the Leopold K.C.’s.

Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 8, 2021 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Randy Tochtrop officiating.

Interment will follow in Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson.
