Mildred Elizabeth Smith, age 100, passed away Friday night, July 31, 2026, surrounded by her family. She was born on December 22, 1925, to Fred Green and Amy Leadbetter Green in St. Louis, MO.

After graduating from Roosevelt High School, Mildred worked as a telephone operator in Long Beach, CA until she met the love of her life Bill Smith. She and Bill were married June 10, 1944 in Piggott, Arkansas.

Mildred worked in the Jackson R-2 food service for several years, then became the Food Service Director over all Cape Girardeau Public Schools until her retirement in 1987.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Jackson for over 60 years, then was a Charter Member of Mercy Hill Baptist Church in Jackson, Missouri until her death.

Mildred had numerous hobbies, including cooking & setting a beautiful table, baking, canning, crafts, sewing, crocheting, knitting, basket weaving, quilting, shopping, reading and traveling.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her children - one daughter: Jean (Ray) Schweain of Jackson, MO; two sons: James D. (Shari) Smith of Tulsa, Ok, and Roger (Stacey) Smith of Whitewater, MO. Mildred loved family and enjoyed spending time with her 15 grandchildren: Kathie Schweain Zank, Kristi Schweain (Jeff) Thurman, Eric (Sara) Schweain, Ryan (Kristin) Schweain, Geoff Smith, Gregory Smith, Kelly Smith, Carmen Smith, Barrett Smith, Corey Smith, Andy (Elizabeth) Siebert, Patrick (Kim) Siebert, Lindsay Siebert (Greg) Murray, Zach Smith and Kaitlyn Smith. She was blessed with an additional twenty great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bill of 72 years, her daughter, Cynthia Kramer and son-in-law, Ken Kramer, and her grandson-in-law Brian Zank.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson, MO. The funeral will be held on Thursday, August 6, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Aaron Campbell of Mercy Hill Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow in the Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson, MO.
