Shirley A. (Hartle) Holmes

Shirley A. Holmes, 89, of Jackson, passed away Thursday, February 9, 2023, at the Villas of Jackson. She was born December 19, 1933, in Jackson, to Harry R. and Annabelle Wofford Hartle. She married James "Jim" Slinkard. When their only child, Sherry was just eight weeks old, Jim was tragically killed in a logging accident. Shirley found new happiness when she married Roy L. Holmes on November 6, 1954, in Jackson. Their union was blessed with four children, Terry, Kathy, Tom, and Tim. They had been married nearly 53 years when Roy passed away September 16, 2007. Shirley was a graduate of Jackson High School. After the children were in school, she worked several years as a receiving clerk at Procter and Gamble. Although Shirley wasn't particularly fond of the outdoors, she enjoyed camping with her family in earlier years. She also liked to quilt, knit and sew. Shirley was a member of La Croix United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau. Loving survivors include five children, Sherry (Mike) Jones of Millersville, Mo., Terry Holmes of Wappapello, Missouri, Kathy (the late Danny) Barks of Jackson, Tom Holmes of Jackson, and Tim (Mary) Holmes of Jackson; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Roger Hartle of Millersville. She was preceded in death by her second husband, Roy Holmes; first husband, Jim Slinkard; and her parents. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m., Monday, February 13, 2023, at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson. The Rev. Brett Cheek will conduct the funeral service at 10 a.m., Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at the funeral home. Interment will follow at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield. Memorials may take the form of contributions to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Jackson Senior Center, or the Alzheimer's Association.
