Shirley Marie Meyr, 82, of Jackson, passed away on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau.
She was born August 3, 1943, in Tilsit, the daughter of Paul and Mildred Friese Amelunke. She was baptized September 5, 1943, and confirmed April 14, 1957, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Tilsit, also the church of her marriage to Vernon E. Meyr, on August 8, 1964. Following their marriage, she became a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in New Wells, serving four years as a Sunday School teacher. Their union was blessed with two daughters, Linda and Karen.
Shirley was a 1961 graduate of Jackson High School. She worked at the Hosiery Mill in Jackson from 1961 to 1966. For the remainder of her married life, she was a homemaker and worked alongside Vernon on the family farm. They had been married 48 years when Vernon passed away November 21, 2012.
During her years in assisted living and skilled care at the Lutheran Home, Shirley remained active and engaged in several hobbies, including crocheting, word searches, puzzles, and coloring. She especially enjoyed playing Bingo on Fridays. She developed many friendships with the staff and residents during her stay at the care facility.
Loving survivors include two daughters, Linda (Tom) Schreiner and Karen (David) Roth, both of Old Appleton; four granddaughters, Andrea (Lynn) Hayth of Casper, Wyoming; Alison (Chris) Gillespie of Centennial, Colorado; Lydia and Myra Roth of Old Appleton; one great-grandson, Austin Hayth; a brother, Ronnie Amelunke of Jackson; a niece and four nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 5 p.m., Sunday, January 11, 2026, and from 9:30 to 11 a.m., Monday, January 12, 2026, at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.
The Rev. Steven Theiss will conduct the funeral service at 11 a.m., Monday, at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson.
