Susan L. Loughlin, age 80, of Cape Girardeau, passed away Saturday, November 18, 2017 at Chateau Girardeau in Cape Girardeau.
She was born March 6, 1937 in South Bend, Indiana, the daughter of William and Bernadette Martin Loughlin. She married Dr. James A. Buckenmyer.
Susan was raised in Pinellas Park, Florida and South Bend, Indiana. She obtained an Assoiciate of Arts degree in Nursing from Southeast Missouri State University and later graduated Berea College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing.
Susan worked at Chateau Girardeau in Cape Girardeau for several years as the charge nurse. She also worked for the State of Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services Division of Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs.
She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Cape Girardeau and had previously attended Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Jackson, until her health began to fail the last few years.
Susan loved her extended family and was always working to give comfort to others as well as to all of God's creations.
Loving survivors include four children, Marci Freeborg of Jackson, James Buckenmyer of Friendsville, Tennessee, Dan (Terra) Buckenmyer of Jackson, and Regina Buckenmyer of Cape Girardeau; seven grandchildren, Joshua (Jenna), Rebecca (Albert), William, Jane, Jenna, Alissa and Nature; and three great grandchildren, Amelia, Greyson and Max.
Also surviving are four siblings, John (Mary Lou) Loughlin, of Indianapolis, IN, Barbara Loughlin Martin, of Travelers Rest, SC, Kathryn Jones, of Grand Junction, CO, and Terri Loughlin, of Littleton, CO; and her former husband, Dr. James A. Buckenmyer.
She was preceded in death by her parents and five siblings, James, Francis, and Robert Loughlin Martin, Margaret Ibrahim and Marie Waters.
A wake will be held from 4-7 pm, Monday, November 20, 2017 at McCombs Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau. Susan was very proud of her Irish heritage and if you wish please wear green to honor her.
A funeral mass will be 11 am, Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Father Francisco Gordillo officiating. Burial will be held Saturday, November 25th,at 10:00 am in South Bend Highland Cemetery in South Bend, Indiana.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions to be made to the Chateau Girardeau Employees Fund, 3120 Independence St., Cape Girardeau, MO 63703 (preferably by December 11, 2017.
