Vera Dean Mayfield

Vera Dean Mayfield, age 87, passed away on Sunday, September 20, 2026, at Chateau Girardeau in Cape Girardeau, MO.

She was the first born of Melford and Estel Rhodes on October 29, 1938, in Crump, MO.

On July 1, 1956, in Sedgewickville, MO she married Ralph E. Mayfield who preceded her in death on October 10, 2017.

Vera attended Crump grade school in Crump, MO and then graduated from Delta High School in 1956.

She worked at the Jackson Hosiery Mill, Lenco and International Shoe Company in Jackson, MO for thirty-three years, and Lee Rowan for ten years. After retiring in 1999, she and her husband enjoyed traveling through out the United States. This included Hawaii and Alaska with the addition of more than twenty countries. In all but two provinces in Canada. She loved to collect oil lamps and glassware.

Vera was a member of the First Baptist Church in Millersville, MO. She was an assistant Sunday school teacher and worked in the kitchen for bible school. She had been to Ecuador on a mission trip with the church. She was on the decorations and mission committees and had been involved in lots of other work within the church. This included singing in the choir and being a member of the WMU.

In addition to her parents and husband she was also preceded in death boy her son Kenneth E. Mayfield on April 29, 2017, and a nephew Thomas Cobb.

Other survivors include her son Douglas (Denise) Mayfield of Millersville, MO; daughter in law Tammie Mayfield of Jackson, MO; grandchildren: Chad (Robin) Mayfield of Oran, MO, Ashley (Chance) McDowell of Jackson, MO, Leslie (Gary) Mayfield of Jackson, MO, and Rachel (John) Shelton of Midlothian, VA; great grandchildren: Elijah Mayfield (Autumn), Camren and Rozlyn McDowell, Cade Shelton, Bradley, Laney and Ayden, Lillian Laurentias; two sisters: Leola (J.D.) King of Cape Girardeau, MO, LaDonna (Mike) Duncan of Hopkinsville, KY; three brothers: Melvin (Charolette) Rhodes of Jackson, MO, Ellis Rhodes, Earl (Phyllis) Rhodes of Cape Girardeau, MO; brother in law Glenn (Naola) Mayfield, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson, MO.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jason Grubbs of First Baptist Church in Millersville officiating.

Interment will follow in the Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson, MO.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations in Vera’s memory be made to the First Baptist Church of Millersville, MO.
