Doris Lee Vangilder, 95, of Jackson passed away May 13, 2018 at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
She was born April 11, 1923, in Cape Girardeau, daughter of Eula Abernathy. Eula later married Clarence Ludwig and together they raised Doris. She and Ray S. Vangilder were married November 29, 1941. He passed away May 7, 1991.
Doris was a longtime member of New McKendree United Methodist Church in Jackson. She was actively involved at the church, where she served as a former Sunday school teacher for pre-school, was a member of the Mary Martha Circle and cooked many bereavement dinners at the church. After Pearl Harbor, Ray enlisted in the service and Doris followed him to West Palm Beach, Florida where he did his training and she lived for the duration of World War II. While living in Florida Doris worked in a local Jewelry Store. When the war ended they relocated back to Jackson. Doris enjoyed gardening and crocheting, but her true joy was being with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Loving survivors include one son Ed (Debbie) Vangilder of Pocahontas and one daughter Cindy Vangilder of Jackson; two granddaughters Jennifer Vangilder and Jessica (Charley) Schoen; five great-grandchildren Parker Ray Schoen, Cooper Schoen, Aliyah Schoen, Keyton Briner and Sofia Briner.
Also surviving are two sisters Wanda Schuette and Barbara Bowers.
She was preceded in death by her parents Clarence and Eula Ludwig.
Visitation will be at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson on Wednesday, May 16, 2018 from 10:00 AM until service time.
Funeral service will be at 12:00 PM, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Jimmie Corbin officiating.
Interment will follow in Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson.
