In 1976, Gary and Carolyn moved the family to their new home near Burfordville.  He was a general contractor and owned Custom Builders.  In 1985, he built The Corner Store in Burfordville with his neighbor.

Gary liked to be outdoors, loved warm weather, bass fishing, gardening, and woodworking.  He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Gary was known for his willingness to help others, his vast and varied knowledge, and his sense of humor.  He was always faithful to Christ and was active in the Cape County Cowboy Church in Gravel Hill.

To cherish his memory, Gary leaves his wife of nearly 62 years, Carolyn Monteith; two children, Kerri (Larry) Wagner of Burfordville, and Scott Monteith of Marble Hill; daughter-in-law, Kim (late Jim) Monteith of Jackson; grandchildren:  Britney Doyal and her daughter Callie of Santa Fe, Texas; Jacob (Megan) Monteith and their children, Haven, Asher, and Rose of Gordonville; Austin (Macy) Doyal and their sons, Marshall and Ronan of Jackson; Joshua Doyal of Burfordville; a sister, Sharon (Dale) Wolyniak; and five half-siblings.

He was preceded in death by a son, Gary James “Jim” Monteith, Jr.; an infant son; and his parents.
