Erma J. "Joan" Burns, 88, of Jackson, passed away Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at Chateau Girardeau in Cape Girardeau.
She was born February 19, 1935, in Egypt Mills, Missouri, to Leo and Frieda Maag Nussbaum. She and Frank Burns were married April 10, 1954, at Christ Lutheran Church in Gordonville. They had been married 69 years when Frank passed away only a week ago, on October 10, 2023.
Joan never liked to sit still. While raising her children, she was active in PTA and was a leader in the Brookside 4-H Club in Jackson. She enjoyed gardening, canning, quilting, and cooking, and is well-remembered for her delicious pies and pickles.
She was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jackson, and for many years, she volunteered on Tuesdays, at the Teen Challenge Thrift Store in Cape Girardeau.
Loving survivors include three children, Victor (Carolyn) Burns, Todd R. (Teresa) Burns, and Lynn (late Doug) Schreiner, all of Jackson; six grandchildren: Brittany Moore and fiancé Tod Daniels; Brandi (Luke) LeGrand; Brandon (Megan) Lorenz; Justin (Mindy) Lorenz; Mandie (Brent) Presser; Deanna (Keith) Costello; beloved great-grandchildren; and four siblings, Gladys Kraemer, Bob Nussbaum, Lora Henk, and Vanna Hoyt.
She was preceded in death by her husband; and seven siblings: Rudy and Butch Nussbaum, Dorothy Latko, Colleen Weisenborn, Fay Amelunke, Viola Sadler, and Nelda Craft.
A memorial visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m., Friday, October 20, 2023, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jackson.
The Rev. Joshua Schmidt will conduct a memorial service at 11 a.m., Friday, October 20, 2023, at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to St. Paul Lutheran Church or school.
