Joan never liked to sit still. While raising her children, she was active in PTA and was a leader in the Brookside 4-H Club in Jackson. She enjoyed gardening, canning, quilting, and cooking, and is well-remembered for her delicious pies and pickles.
She was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jackson, and for many years, she volunteered on Tuesdays, at the Teen Challenge Thrift Store in Cape Girardeau.
