Mary Elizabeth Dumey, 86, passed away on November 5, 2023, at Jackson Manor in Jackson, Missouri.
She was born July 7, 1937, in Portageville, Missouri, to Robert and Matlean (Lawson) McElyea.
Mary was a 1954 graduate of Oran High School. In 1956, she married Robert (Bob) Dean Dumey, and they had two daughters, Karen and Shirlie. When they were first married, they lived in Rockview, Missouri. A few years later, they moved to Chicago, where Mary helped Bob manage an apartment building throughout the 1950's and 1960's. In 1967, Mary and Bob opened a Dixie Cream donut shop in Boulder, Colorado, until they relocated to Jackson in 1969. At that time, Mary raised her daughters while Bob traveled around the country with his job with Dixie Cream. In 1972, Mary and Bob opened Bob's Donuts in Jackson until they sold it in the late 1970's. That is when Mary began working in the office of Lenco, Inc., in Jackson, where she was in charge of Customer Relations.
While she was healthy, Mary was an active member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Jackson. She served on the Parish Council, was a member of St. Anne's Sodality, and helped with bereavement meals. Mary was an accomplished seamstress and an outstanding cook, who enjoyed serving delicious meals to her family and friends. She and Bob rarely missed watching a Cardinal baseball game, and she was a fan of Duke basketball. Mary always helped family and friends in need, including caring for her mother-in-law, Bob's great aunt, and Bob, especially after he had his stroke.
Survivors include her daughters, Karen Dumey of Jackson and Shirlie Wright and her husband, Tom, of Union, Missouri; her grandsons Matthew Wright of Union, Missouri, and Blake Wright and his wife, Jessica, of Jackson, Missouri; and her great-granddaughter, Caroline, of Union, Missouri. Other survivors include her sister Virgie (Butch) Koeppel of Jackson, Missouri; Steve (Liz) McElyea of Jackson, Missouri; Greg (Kathy) McElyea, of Mokena, Illinois; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert; her sister, Pansy McElyea; and her brother, Samuel McElyea.
