Mary Meta Daume, 94, of Oak Ridge, passed away Saturday, January 16, 2021, at Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau.
She was born April 16, 1926, north of Jackson, to John William and Meta Lydia Engelmann Daume. The family moved to the Engelmann home place, north of Oak Ridge, in 1928. Mary lived there nearly 85 years and for nearly 20 years, her great-nephew, Dennis Hennecke, resided with her. In 2013, Mary transitioned to the Monticello House.
Mary was a 1945 graduate of Oak Ridge High School. Thereafter, she helped on the family farm, raising chickens and milking cows. She was a historian, a poet, and worked privately many years as an in-home-caregiver.
Mary served as chairman of the Historical Committee of the Oak Ridge School Centennial; researched the history of the township and one-room school; served on the committee to restore the Arnsberg Cemetery; and had a poem published on the front cover of Farmland News Magazine.
She was a lifelong, faithful member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Fruitland. She served as the president of the Women’s Fellowship, and helped organize the cemetery plots, map, and file box. She translated the old German records, collecting photos of charter members and former pastors, and made an indexed record book of the church history. She served as chairman of the church Centennial Committee, and wrote an article for the monthly church letter.
Loving survivors include a sister, Dorothy (the late Lawrence) Heise of Oak Ridge; nieces and nephews, Margaret Anne Heise, Jon (Scarlett) Heise, Jeannie (Ron) Lohmann, Carol (Roy) Bollinger, Connie Oliveros, Mary (Brent) Bollinger, Roger (Kathy) Daume, Dan (Sherri) Daume, Carla (Alan) Bryant, Kate (Jeff) Rihn; Kathie Daume, wife of late nephew Steve; and John Bochantin, husband of late niece Marrietta Jo; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. All of Mary’s nieces and nephews were blessed to have Aunt Mary in their lives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three adult siblings, Louise (Lloyd) Schoenebeck, John J. (Delores) Daume, Martha (Elmer) Kamp; a stillborn sister, Meta Marie Daume.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to service time, Monday, January 18, 2020, at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m., at the funeral home, with Dr. Rodney Pensel officiating. Burial will follow at St. John’s Cemetery in Fruitland.
