Penny Gail King, 60, of Jackson, passed away Tuesday, March 19, 2024, in the Intensive Care Unit of S.S.M. St. Clare in Fenton, Missouri. She had been transferred from Cape Girardeau to Fenton after suffering from a stroke at home on Monday evening.
Penny was born July 31, 1963, in Cape Girardeau, to Donald E. and June E. Schneider Borgfield. On April 4, 1981, Penny was united in marriage to Greg King, with marriage nuptials performed by her uncle, the Rev. Jack Schneider, at Emanuel United Church of Christ in Jackson, also the church where Penny was baptized and confirmed.
Penny was proud to be a farmer’s daughter and was raised in rural Jackson. She was a 1981 graduate of Jackson High School. She operated an in-home daycare for several years and then worked nearly 20 years as a loan officer at Cape Regional Credit Union, retiring in 2015 after suffering from two strokes.
Together, Penny and Greg served the Lord for over 40 years. Penny served alongside Greg as an associate and senior pastor for many years. She volunteered in multiple capacities, but her favorite ministries always involved children and youth, including in missions. She and Greg were currently members of Lighthouse United Church on Southern Expressway in Cape Girardeau.
Penny and Greg cherished their family, and they took great joy in spending time together. Penny spent many weekends and weekdays traveling to watch the sporting events of the grandchildren, always sitting in the stands loudly cheering them on. If she couldn't make it to a game, she would live stream and cheer from her living room and then send a text afterwards telling them how proud she was of them. She would always take them up on movie dates and board games and be their number one competitor in laser tag.
To cherish her memory, Penny leaves her husband of 42 years, Greg King of Jackson; daughters, Brandee (Chris) Reagan and children Braysen, Michaela, and Autumn of Fredericktown, Missouri; and Danielle (Brad) Gross and children Brayden and Brynlee of Park Hills, Missouri; her mother, June (the late Don) Borgfield of Jackson; a sister, Kim (the late Rob) Hodo of Jackson; Greg’s parents, Joe and Earlene King of Jackson; two sisters-in-law, Kristi King of Jackson, and Mary Pat (the late Joey) King of Jackson; eight nieces and nephews and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her father, Don Borgfield; a granddaughter, Breeona Gail Reagan; a grandson, Rylan Christian Reagan; and 10 more angel grandbabies; two brothers-in-law, Rob Hodo and Joey King; aunts, Edna Lee (John) Slinkard and Audrey Borgfield, and her cousin, Sandy Borgfield Schnicker.
A memorial visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Thursday, March 28, 2024, at the Lighthouse United Church at 710 Southern Expressway in Cape Girardeau. Pastor Adrian Taylor and Rev. Sam Roethemeyer will conduct a life celebration ceremony at 12 p.m., at the church. She will be laid to rest by her family, at Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson.
If considering a memorial, the family suggests contributions to Lighthouse United Church. The church has adopted an orphanage and school in Kenya, and this cause was close to Penny’s heart. Please memo checks “For Kenya Mission”.
Penny’s cremation arrangements were entrusted to McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.
