William L. “Bill” Green, 89, of Jackson, passed away Tuesday, September 8, 2020, at the home of a daughter in Bloomfield, Missouri.
Born February 28, 1931, in Midway, Kentucky, to Jesse J. and Sally Carter Green, he was one of nine children. He was a graduate of Midway High School. He met Nan Carpenter on a blind date and he “loved her from the first time he saw her smile”. They were married November 3, 1956, at Midway Christian Church. Five children were born to their union.
He was a medical corpsman on the USS Des Moines during the Korean War, serving honorably in the U.S. Navy from December 25, 1950 to November 5, 1954.
Bill and Nan raised their family in Jackson and lived there more than 60 years. Bill worked 33 years at Procter and Gamble, retiring in 1988. He then worked several years as a custodian at North Elementary in Fruitland. Bill was also a hobby farmer and for several years, he worked as a ring man for auctioneers, Jim Reynolds and Doyle Grindstaff. He and Nan were members of First Assembly of God Church in Jackson.
Loving survivors include his wife of nearly 64 years, Nan of Bloomfield; five children, Kelly (Denise) Green of DeWitt, Arkansas; Kayelean (Bill) Vance of Bloomfield; Wanda (Dwight) Hensley of Bloomfield; Suzanne (Jerome) Townsend of Jackson, and Joy Harris of Dexter, Missouri; 12 grandchildren: Nathan Green, Erin Baldwin, Bethany Reece, Kory Vance, Tyson Hensley, Leighton Hensley, Alana Wilson, Quade Townsend, Kendall Townsend, Brayden Beaird, Peyton Beaird, and Daythan Lane; 11 great-grandchildren; and three siblings, David Green, Betty Ann Sowers, and Charlene Harmon.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and four siblings, Jesse Green, Jr., Gay Renfro, Gladys Smith, and Buddy Green; and an infant sister, Fay Green.
Visitation is from 11 AM to service time, Friday, September 11, 2020, at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.
The funeral is at 12 PM, Friday, September 11, 2020, at the funeral home, with Bill’s son-in-law, the Rev. Dwight Hensley officiating. Burial and and graveside military honors will follow at Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson.
